Just a Bag of Flour

During the last week of October, the senior class of Union High School were given fake babies filled with flour to take care of, clothe, protect, and bring to their health class each day in preparation for the perils of parenthood they might have to face one day.

UHS Health teacher Mr. Grasso says he believes the flour baby project is a good way to teach seniors how to control money and how to co-operate between two people.

UHS Senior Gaby Abounaja said she thinks that the project really helped her learn how to be responsible for a baby and appreciate how hard parents have to work, adding that she believes it would be better for the project to be two weeks since real parenting lasts a lifetime.

Not all the seniors taking part in the flour baby project are as enthusiastic and positive about the project. UHS Senior Mekhai Rivers was overwhelmingly against the mere existence of the project, “I haven’t learned much of anything, it’s basically just a bag of flour.”

Rivers adds that there were a few difficulties during the process including providing the supplies, which ended up costing upwards of $40 for some students, and splitting up the responsibilities between his project partner, a component of the project he admits he didn’t fully consider.

The effectiveness of the flour baby project has been up for debate for several years. 64-year-old mother Lucie Maragni, who did a similar project instead using an egg when she was in high school, believed that the project truly helped her when she actually became a mother and had to take care of and protect a child.
