In February, Chromebooks were provided to Union High School students as part of the district’s 1:1 program. Students complaints quickly surfaced, following the discovery of restrictions put on seemingly harmless sites.

Though many agree that it was a necessary step of innovation for our school community, the website restrictions consistently seem to be a point of frustration for both students and teachers. “The school has blocked almost every website that isn’t Google or education-affiliated, including news websites,” said UHS Senior Nathan Felix. “It has become more of an inconvenience since certain websites needed for research have been blocked as well.”

On the other side of this argument, the many restrictions are encouraged to promote focus and to stop procrastination.

While some students have mixed opinions, many teachers adore the laptop. “I like being able to click and just comment on my students work,” said UHS Science teacher Mrs. Prieto. “Students now have information at their fingertips.”

Students have the ability to access information they might need for school while sitting in their classrooms, and are also able to stay engaged with peers for group projects.

“We’re in a world that’s connected, we’re constantly online and connecting with other people and information,” said UHS English teacher Mr. Rios. Pros and cons are subjective, but the educational benefits and advancement in communication among students and educators cannot be ignored.
